My name is Sarah Fauset and I’m the creator of get TEFL. You can see a photo of me at the top of the website from when I was teaching English abroad.
* We are currently full but should have 1 post opening up next week.
I had only planned on teaching English abroad for a year but I had such a great time, I ended up staying for 3 years without even coming back!!
I was able to save a lot of money! I met teachers from all over the world.
The benefits of my job were amazing. I got:
- FREE flights
- FREE accommodation
- A great salary
- Health care
- Paid holidays
- A 20-30 hour work week
While teaching abroad, I got to:
- Discover a new country
- Experience a new culture
- Learn a new language
- Save money!
- Enjoy a high standard of living with a low cost of living
- Meet other teachers from all over the world
- ...Oh and I Became a rock star to my students!
By the time I had returned home, I had paid off all of my student loans.
I missed teaching and my students so I taught English online for a year.
Soon after I partnered with the most reputable English schools abroad and began recruiting teachers for their schools. I wanted to give others the chance to travel and save money.
Over the last 10 years, I have received invaluable feedback from employers on my teacher's performance in the classroom. Employers revealed to me what they liked, what they didn't like and what my teachers needed to do to meet their expectations.
Most English teachers I was placing abroad received endless complaints from their employers despite them being TEFL certified. I knew I needed to solve this problem if I wanted to continue recruiting teachers to teach English abroad. Part of my job involves guaranteeing my teachers would succeed but how could I do this if TEFL courses weren't providing adequate training?
After much research, I discovered most TEFL courses are based on THEORY which leave teachers helpless in the classroom. Most TEFL courses teach lessons on the history of the English language instead of how to teach English. For assignments, teachers are forced to write essays on useless topics. How could this help a teacher teach?
Finally I realized if I wanted properly trained teachers, I would have to train them myself. I decided to create a course that would tell teacher exactly what to do. The lessons would be practical. Shortly after gettefl.com was born.
It took me 3 years to create get TEFL. I had to compile 10 years worth of feedback from employers, 3 years of teaching experience abroad, 1 year of experience teaching online and the 3 years of independent research I did on best teaching methodologies, all into one course. My degree in English and Education also have been instrumental in the development of our TEFL courses. I teach you everything I have learned throughout the years and how to avoid the mistakes I made.
Teaching English as a foreign language is NOT a no brainer. There is a lot you need to know if you want to succeed. Do you know grammar? Could you teach it? Do you know how to make efficient lesson plans? Do you know how to make learning interesting? Do you know how to meet your bosses expectations? Could you control your classes? Do you know how to get your students to respect you? I could go on and on. A teaching job without the proper teaching skills is useless. You need the right teaching skills to keep your job.
Most teachers have no teaching experience which is a recipe for disaster. Without the right training, don't expect things to go well. Your classes will be out of control. You will be standing in front of your students with a red face and shaking knees. Your boss will get annoyed. Your students will lose respect for you and you'll start to feel like a fish in a shark tank. First impressions are very important. Needless to say, teachers without the right training are often flustered and overwhelmed.
Some schools claim to provide training but this usually entails watching a teacher teach for 2 days. This is not enough time to learn anything. If schools are pressed for time which they usually are, they will skip the training all together.
Most job advertisements says beginners are welcome. However, employers have high expectations. They like to hire beginner teachers so they can pay them the beginner's salary but employers will expect them to teach like a pro. Your employer won't tell you what you are doing wrong, they will just keep getting annoyed until they replace you. After all...getting the right training is your responsibility.
It is crucial to get a good reference from your first employer if you ever want to get hired again. All employers will call your first reference on the telephone NOT a written reference to find out if you were a good teacher...or not.
Even being a certified teacher is not enough to prepare you for teaching abroad. Teaching English as a foreign language is a completely unique experience. You won't have acquired these skills from any other experience. You will be teaching a language to students who don't understand you. You need to know how to extensively how to break down a language AND teach it!

These days you don't have to look hard to find a TEFL course. Many different companies offer TEFL courses. There are a lot of generic TEFL courses out there that don't even tell you who they are and what experience they have. Some universities even offer TEFL courses. They will give you a credit if you sign for their TEFL course. However, have you ever learnt any practical hands on skills from a university? Most universities teach THEORY which will make your transition into the classroom VERY difficult. Most TEFL courses teach theory. You could get the information they provide out a library! get TEFL is one of the only practical TEFL courses out there! We don't teach textbook definitions...We teach you how to actually TEACH!
Unless you have flown to the other side of the world and gone into the trenches and done the teaching, you are NOT going to be able to properly train other teachers for the job. Also without the insight that I have received from employers over the last decade, you won't be able to meet employer's expectations. You will just be guessing in the dark until you are replaced by your employer. I'm literally holding the key to the information you need. I just wish I could have got it as easy as you can....ha!
Believe it or not, a lot of education institutions don't actually give you the practical training you need to succeed at a job in the real world. In this industry, teaching jobs and TEFL courses are often in different countries with no way to bridge the gap. Until now...
get TEFL teaches you how to do your job properly...You won't find this information in any other TEFL course. Be careful because not all TEFL courses are the same quality.
