I had only planned on teaching English abroad for a year but I had such a great time, I ended up staying for 3 years without even coming back!!

After much research, I discovered most TEFL courses are based on THEORY which leave teachers helpless in the classroom. Most TEFL courses teach lessons on the history of the English language instead of how to teach English. For assignments, teachers are forced to write essays on useless topics instead of learning how to teach. How could this help a teacher teach?
Finally I realized if I wanted properly trained teachers, I would have to train them myself. I decided to create a course that would explain to teachers exactly what they needed to do in the classroom. Shortly after, gettefl.com was born.
It took me over 3 years to create get TEFL. I had to compile all 3 years worth of teaching experience abroad, 10 years worth of feedback I received from employers, 1 year of experience teaching online, 3 years of independent research on best teaching methodologies, different techniques I had learned in teacher's college and in my English classes, all into one course. My degree in English and Education were instrumental in the development of get TEFL.

Teaching English as a foreign language is NOT a 'no brainer'. There is a lot you need to know...if you want to succeed. Do you know grammar? Could you teach it? You will be standing in front of your students with a red face and shaking knees. Your boss will get annoyed. Your students will lose respect for you and you'll start to feel like a fish in a shark tank. First impressions are very important. Needless to say, teachers without the right training are often flustered and overwhelmed.
Some schools claim to provide training but this usually entails watching a teacher teach for 2 days. This is not enough time to learn anything. If schools are pressed for time which they usually are, they usually skip the training all together.
Most job advertisements says beginners are welcome. However, employers have high expectations. They like to hire beginner so they can pay them the beginner's salary but employers will expect them to teach like a pro. Your employer won't tell you what you are doing wrong, they will just keep getting annoyed until they replace you. After all...getting the right training is your responsibility, not theirs.
It is crucial to get a good reference from your first employer if you ever want to get hired again. All employers will call your first reference on the telephone NOT a written reference to find out if you were a good teacher...or not.
Even being a certified teacher is not enough to prepare you for teaching abroad. Teaching English as a foreign language is a completely unique experience. You won't have acquired these skills from any other experience. You will be teaching a language to students who don't understand you. You need to know how to extensively how to break down a language AND teach it!
